One Month Workshop - Daily Schedule January 2026

Week 1: Introduction to Core Techniques
Focus: Basic throwing skills including cylinders and bowls, with an introduction to glaze chemistry.

  • Monday, January 5 – Introduction to Cylinders (Instructor: TBC) & Ceramic History
Begin the week by learning the fundamentals of wheel throwing, focusing on basic cylinder forms in the morning. The afternoon will feature an introductory lecture on ceramic history, clay bodies, and firing methods, along with the principles of ceramic chemistry.

  • Tuesday, January 6 – Cylinder Review (Instructor: TBC) & First Glaze Lab
The morning session will be dedicated to refining your cylinder-throwing technique and building consistency. In the afternoon, you'll be introduced to glaze materials and begin your first glaze tests.

  • Wednesday, January 7 – Handles (Instructor: TBC) & Intro to Glaze Materials
In the morning, you'll learn how to attach handles to your previously thrown cylinders. The afternoon will include a lecture and discussion on glaze materials, as well as a review of your initial glaze test results from the previous day.

  • Thursday, January 8 – Bowl Forms (Instructor: TBC) & Flux Capacity Lab
Explore throwing bowl forms by learning how to open and expand clay shapes on the wheel in the morning. In the afternoon, you'll conduct a second glaze test, this time focusing on evaluating the flux capacity of your glaze materials.

  • Friday, January 9 – Finishing Work (Instructor: TBC) & Final Glaze Chemistry Lecture
Spend the morning trimming and finishing your work from the week, including attaching any remaining handles. The afternoon will include a final lecture reviewing the week’s glaze test results, discussing findings, and documenting your work.

Week 2: Plates, Slabs & Surface Decorationntroduction to Core Techniques
Focus: Altered forms, flatware and coiled pots.

  • Monday, January 12 – Throwing & Alteration (Instructor: TBC)
Learn to throw cylindrical forms and alter them into oval shapes, with a focus on clean transitions and maintaining structural integrity.

  • Tuesday, January 13 – Developing Oval Forms (Instructor: TBC)
Refine your oval forms with attention to proportion, function, and intentional design choices.

  • Wednesday, January 14 – Lugs & Handles for Oval Shapes (Instructor: TBC)
Add handles to your oval forms while exploring balance, ergonomics, and visual harmony.

  • Thursday, January 15 – Pinch Pots & Coil Building (Instructor: TBC)
Explore traditional handbuilding techniques through pinch pots and coiling, emphasizing intuitive shaping and structural coherence.

  • Friday, January 16 – Continued Coil Building (Instructor: TBC)
Expand on your coiling techniques to create more complex or larger forms, integrating decorative possibilities and refining construction.

Week 3: Functional Forms – Plates, Decoration & Tea Bowls
Focus: Intermediate forms with emphasis on shaping, assembly, surface design, and function.

  • Monday, January 19 – Thrown Plates (Instructor: TBC)
Learn both wheel-thrown and slab-built plate techniques, focusing on warping prevention and clean edge finishing.

  • Tuesday, January 20 – Slab Building Vases (Instructor: TBC)
Explore slip trailing and other surface techniques to enhance visual interest and texture on your flatware.

  • Wednesday, January 21 –Thrown Plates Continued (Instructor: TBC)
After two days of allowing plates from Monday to dry, we come back to them to trim the weight of, discuss foot design, and decorate with slip trailing techniques.

  • Thursday, January 22 – Tea Bowl Introduction (Instructor: TBC)
Dive into the expressive and functional aspects of tea bowls shapes.

  • Friday, January 23 – Tea Bowl Throwing & Trimming (Instructor: TBC)
Refine your tea bowl forms with focused attention on rim, foot, and overall balance through throwing and trimming practice.

Week 4: Teapots, Assemblage & Personal Project
Focus: Advanced functional forms, complex assembly, and personal creative development.
