THE TEAPOT with Tricia Thom

Three Day Masterclass - Intermediate Level

16th, 17th and 18th October from 11:00-17:00 each day

The teapot is the ultimate test of a potter’s skill, requiring a perfect marriage of engineering and soul. We are thrilled to host Tricia Thom for this three-day deep dive into the "architecture of the pour."

Over one long weekend in the mews, Tricia will share her refined, Japanese-influenced techniques for creating teapots that are as beautiful to hold as they are to use. This is a fast-paced but meditative course designed for those ready to master the complex relationship between body, spout, and lid.

The Three-Day Flow

  • Day 1: Throwing Core Components
After a demonstration by Tricia on throwing for volume and tension, you will spend the morning throwing teapot bodies and matching galleries. You will cut through your initial pieces to check the thickness of your walls and the depth of your bases. Trouble shooting and form improvements will then be put into practice. You will be shown and then practice the use of a throwing stick to create volume and roundness.

  • Day 2: Throwing the ‘Accessories’
Today you will learn to throw multiple lids and spouts to allow for choice and refinement during assembly. You will learn how each choice can influence the character of your final works and start to choose the style in which you would like to lean towards.

  • Day 3: The Art of Assembly. Surface, Detail & The Final Pour

As your pieces reach leather-hard, we focus on the joinery. You will learn Tricia’s precision turning techniques to lighten the forms and refine the foot rings. The afternoon is dedicated to the delicate dance of attachment: fitting spouts for a drip-free pour and pulling handles that provide a balanced, ergonomic "spring”. We will also cover the technical essentials of "the sieve" (drilling the pour holes) and final detailing. Crown Works will provide some vessels as bisque-ware fro Tricia to demonstrate how she approaches decoration at this stage with a short session of practicing gestural mark making using various brushes with Oxide Washes.

We'll end the intensive with a group review of our forms, discussing how ritual and community inform every piece we make.

Requirements:
This is an Intermediate intensive. You should be confident in throwing consistent shapes and managing clay at different stages of dryness.
